Musical Director

 Julius Stenzel is a graduate of Pomona College in Los Angeles, where he studied harmony, chamber music, and choral and orchestral conducting. He is also holder of a degree in literature, history and philosophy. He studied the cello in the United States under the tuition of Paul Cartwright, Donald Homuth and Margot Jean, and singing with Lilian Loran.

Between 1968 and 1978 he was a member of a trio and a vocal quartet centred on music of the Renaissance period and the baroque repertoire. From 1972 to 1977 he turned towards contemporary opera with the Port Costa Players. From 1977 until 1991 he was a cellist with l’Orchestre Symphonique de la Radio-Television Belge de la Communauté Française (RTBF). Since 1981 he has played continuo cello with the vocal and instrumental ensemble La Chapelle des Minimes, which each month performs cantatas by J.S. Bach, and between 1987 and 1992 with the vocal and instrumental ensemble L’Offrande Musicale, which plays on original instruments.

Julius Stenzel teaches cello, baroque music and chamber music privately, at the European School in Brussels and at summer schools.

Julius is artistic co-director of La Chapelle des Minimes.

He has been Musical Director of the Brussels Madrigal Singers since 1992.
